4. “slaves in the south were treated better than slaves in the north”

AGAINST

1. quakers and some abolitionists just thought it was morally wrong

2. white northerners thought free blacks were stealing job opportunities

• Wilmot Proviso

  • proposed any land gained from U.S/MX war comes in free since TX had come in slave

Douglass added an amendment that repealed comp of 1820, and that 2 territories would be created, Kansas and nebraska. Bill passes. First time in 34 yrs that slavery could be expanded. Also created sectional republican party (sectionalism)
