CAUSES OF CW: Sectionalism (1)

  • Wilmot Proviso

    • proposed any land gained from U.S/MX war comes in free since TX had come in slave

    • congress votes along sectional lines (northern dems/whigs yes and southern dems/whigs no) and it never passes

  • Southern Rights Convention

    • result of CA and Pres. Taylor breaking Comp of 1820, succession is discussed

  • Comp of 1850

    • 1. CA will come in free 2. The rest of the southwest will decide by popular sovereignty 3. TX will give western lands to NM 4. Abolition of slave trade in DC 5. Stronger fugitive slave law

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

    • Og bill said one territory and popular sovereignty but cuz of comp of 1820 it couldnt be slave. Douglass added an amendment that repealed comp of 1820, and that 2 territories would be created, Kansas and nebraska. Bill passes. First time in 34 yrs that slavery could be expanded. Also created sectional republican party (sectionalism)

  • Ostend Manifesto

    • that one time U.S threatened spain to let them buy cuba, except one of the guys in on the secret deal Soule was outspoken pro slavery guy so Northerners saw this as the gov trying to expand slavery

  • Harpers ferry

Douglass added an amendment that repealed comp of 1820, and that 2 territories would be created, Kansas and nebraska. Bill passes. First time in 34 yrs that slavery could be expanded. Also created sectional republican party (sectionalism)

  • Bleeding Kansas 1955-1959 ish

    • kind of a race b/w what population, pro or anti slavery, will gain majority

    • prompts a lot of violence between groups

    • ex. border ruffians from Missouri sneak in to illegally vote and attack northerners

    • pottawotamie creek: john brown #1 abolitionist attacks southerner settlements after the sacking of Lawrence and kills a few guys. spooks southerners minor more distrust

  • Ostend Manifesto

    • that one time U.S threatened spain to let them buy cuba, except one of the guys in on the secret deal Soule was outspoken pro slavery guy so Northerners saw this as the gov trying to expand slavery

  • Sumner Brooks

    • sectionalism in congress. Sumner gave a speech on bleeding cansas and expansion of slavery, mocks Butler who was pro slavery

    • nephew Brooks decided to pull an “I, Tanya”. causes further divide between north and south on who was right

  • Lincoln vs Douglas Debates

    • Douglas puts out the Freeport Doctrine

Also created sectional republican party (sectionalism)

  • Dread-Scott Decision of 1857

    • decides the Missouri Comp is UNCONSTITUTIONAL bc it prohibited slaves in territories and congress is not allowed to discriminate against ppl from other states

    • makes slavery a state right

    • however north also views supreme court as pro slavery now, further distrust (sectionalism)
