ARCHER - SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE
symbolic capital used negatively. Those inflicted are those who shaped by designer clothes or hyper-heterosexual feminine behaviour (w/c). Suggest education is not for them.
W/C DILEMMA
w/c need to achieve symbolic capital from friends or academic capital from reject w/c subculture.
PRO-SCHOOL
committed to school values, gain approval through academic success, involved in wider life of schools (clubs)
ANTI-SCHOOL
lower streams, truanting, disruption, no HW done, reject school values.
LACY – Formation
Differentiation: teachers categorising according to perceptions.
Polarisation: pupils respond to differentiation through moving to either extreme pole.
PEER GROUPS + SYMBOLIC CAPITAL
reinforcing acceptable behaviour by alienating those that don’t conform, and status to those that do.
REAY – School Environment
Students align ability which type of school. Attend poor schools then they are poor students (vice/versa).
SUBJECT CHOICE
Schools that reinforce gender stereotypes in subjects reinforces gender identity and can shape pupil identity.
UNIFORMS
reinforces gender roles (girls = skirts, boys = trousers). Shape class as W/C might have scruffy uniform.
LABELLING
Positive and negative can affect self-esteem and self-image.
REJECT SUBCULTURES - WILLIS
rejection by school can lead to reject to all authority E.g. ‘Learning to Labour’.
BALL – Ethnocentric Curriculum
very focused on M/C white culture, which can make girls and EM feel excluded.
