Polices enacted by FDR to end the Great Depression and build a new sense of confidence.
The 3 R’s on the new deal:
Reform: Regulate banks, abolish child labor, and conserve farm land
Recovery: Get the economy boosted again
Relief: Provide jobs for the unemployed and to protect farmers from foreclosure
The hundred Days:
First 100 days in FDR’s presidency where congress passed 15 acts to resolve the crisis
First priority: Restore confidence in the banking system
Emergency Banking Relief Act: Gave special licenses to bank that were financially sound and wouldn’t close.
People began putting their money in these banks, and the banking crisis slowed
The three R’s (for the 100 days)
Reform
After the issues that began the GD, there was a need for regulation of banks & the stock market.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
Regulated the stock market, and prevented fraud
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Recovery
Agricultural adjustment Administration (AAA)
Farmers paid to NOT grow certain crops/ harvest cattle
Would end the surplus and raise prices back up
Criticism: raising food prices during a depression?!?!?!?!?
Relief
Work programs for the unemployed, so they can start spending money and boost the economy again
Civilian Conservation Corps (Pronounced Core) (CCC)
Men 18-25 planted trees, fought forest fires, and built reservoirs
By 1942, 3 million were employed
Public Works Admin (PWA)& Civil works Admin (CWA)
Built highways, dams, sewers, schools, airports
One of the few agencies that did not discriminate against black workers.
To summarize the 100 days:
It did not completely restore prosperity, but did restore people’s faith and spirit in the nation.
