Definition

  • Describes an action or a task

  • expresses state of an object

  • describes what does it have (Having)

Types of Verbs

Type 1: Main verb:

  • It explains the actions

  • Eg. Eat, Sleep, Listen

Type 2 Auxillary Verbs

  • Auxillary verbs are also known as accessories verbs.

  • There are two types of Auxillary Verbs

Modal Auxillary

  • These includes words like can, could, will, shall, might, may)

Helping verbs

  • These includes words like

  • Present tense: Is, am, are

  • Past tense: was, were

  • and had, has, have.

Word of Order

  • Subject + Verb + Object is used to complete a sentence

  • Verb = Action, State, Having

Subject Verb Agreement 🤝

  • Definition: In a sentence, a verb has to agree with what subject is doing, is know as Subject Verb Agreement

Rules

  • Golden rule:

    Subject is singular so verb should be singular too

    If the subject is plural verb needs to be plural too

  • Rule 1

    Subjects that are joined by “and” in a sentence use a plural verb.

    EG: Radha and Meera are going to school.

  • Rule 2

    If subjects that are joined by “and” in a sentence have:

    The Subject 1 + The Subject 2 = Plural verb

    The Subject 1 + Subject 2 = Singular verb

  • Rule 3

    When the subjects is followed by words such as no other than, in additon to, as well as, with, together with, along with ignore them and use a singular verb if the subject is singular.

    EG: Arun as well as his brother is going to jail.

    Arun as well as his brother__s__ are going to jail.

  • Rule 4

    Subjects that are joined by pairing conjuctions like Not only/but also, neither/nor, either/nor also use singular verb.

    EG: Neither Akshay nor rohit is coming to the wedding.

  • Rule 5

    Use of words like Each, every, one, none, neither, either whatever nouns or adverbs will always be singular.

    Use of words like Each of the, Every of the, One of the, None of the, Neither of the, Either of the, Nouns will be plural but verbs will be singular.

  • Rule 6

    Add the main verb according to the helping word which do not have its own main verb.

  • Rule 7

    The number of the subject (singular or plural) will not change due to the words/phrases in between the subject and the verb.

    EG: The whole block of flats including the two shops was destoryed in fire.

    WAS is used because the subject is whole block

  • Rule 8

    “Many a “ uses singular noun and verb

    A great many” uses plural noun and verb

    EG: A great many politican are participating in election.

    Many a man has tried but few men have succeed.
