Cell Theory
Up until the 1800s many believed that life came from non-life. For example, people thought maggots on rotting food were just random, not because a fly had laid eggs on the food that when hatched, came out as maggots (they later change into a fly) This belief is known as spontaneous generation. The work of many scientists helped to disprove this idea.
