Basic Structures of a Plant Cell

Cytoplasm

  • the substance in a cell where all organelles are located

  • arranges organelles within cell

  • supports the shape of the cell

  • plays a role in protecting the cell from damage

  • uses storage spaces to store extra glucose produced during photosynthesis

Cell wall

  • protects and maintains cells’ shape

  • ensures that cell won’t burst when too much water is in it

Mitochondria

  • energy center of the cell

  • turns nutrients into ATP energy

Vacuoles

  • responsible for intracellular digestion

  • releases waste

  • help with water balance

Cytoskeleton

  • internal movement and structure of organelles

Genetic material

  • DNA and RNA

  • carries all the knowledge that makes the cell unique

Cilia/Flagella

  • adapted to move cells throughout their environment

Ribosomes

  • site of protein synthesis

Nucleus

  • communicates with the whole cell

  • is in charge of many processes that are necessary for the cell

Nucleolus

  • responsible for producing ribosomes

  • works hard to meet the needs of the cell

Golgi body

  • packages macromolecules for transport
