Sensation meaning
The physical stimulation of sence receptors by the environment.
Perception meaning
The interpretation of sensory information by the brain
Binocular depth cues meaning
Both eyes have to be used to detect the cues.
Retina disparity meaning (a binocular depth cue)
The way the lest and right eye view slightly different images. The size of the differences gives the brain information about depth and distance. The more disparity the further away an object is.
Convergence (a binocular depth cue)
How hard the eye is working to view objects. E.g. if something is closer, the eye muscles have to work harder. This gives the brain information about depth and distance.
Monocular depth cues
Perceptual cues that can be picked up with only one eye.
Height in Plane (Monocular Cue)
Objects that are higher up in the visual field appear further away
Relative size (Monocular cue)
Further away objects look smaller when in fact they aren't. This acts as a depth cue
Occlusion (Monocular cue)
When something is hidden or converted by something else. This is a depth cue because we know that the thing obscuring something else from view is closer, and the thing being obscured is further away.
Linear perspective (Monocular cue)
Parallel lines (like train tracks or roads) appear to get further away from each other the closer they get to you or the further away you are the closer the parallel lines get to each other.
Visual cues
Visual information from the environment about distance and so on
Visual constancies
Help us to perceive that an object remains the same, even when the object project different images onto our retinas in our eyes. E.g. when it is seen from different angles of distances.
Fiction
Because of the suggestions from the illusion we perceive something is there, when there is nothing. An example of this is the kaniza triangle.
Size constancy
When the brain perceives familiar images as the same size, even when the image size changes. E.g. when you see a friend from far away you know it's them, not a miniature version of them.
