Esperanza sacrifices her friendship with Cathy by pitching in for a bike that she will share with her two new friends, Lucy and Rachel. Cathy does not want Esperanza to have anything to do with Lucy and Rachel, explaining that they "smell like a broom." Lucy and Rachel are Chicana sisters whose family is from Texas, and they are more similar to Esperanza than Cathy is. Esperanza is embarrassed to tell her new friends her name, but they don't laugh at it or find it unusual. Esperanza knows she eventually must share her friends and bike with her sister Nenny, since she took money from Nenny to help pay for the bike, but for now, she decides to wait and keep her new friends to herself. The three girls ride their new bike together around the block, and Esperanza describes the geography of the neighborhood.

louies cousin, lives with louies family because her own is in PR. described as always wearing dark nylons and lots of makeup. sells avon. stays inside to babysit louies sisters. sings the same song all the time. her bf is in PR, and they plan on marrying when she returns, although her family is unaware of this. marin waits for the moment she finds someone who will change her life, she dolls herself up because of this.

all of his peers see him as a ‘simpleton’ although he proves himself to be quite the opposite. he makes a comment in regards to a cloud, saying that is was god. in HOMS the sky/clouds are typically symbolism for freedom, so i believe he that was what he was referring to. the cloud wasn’t necessarily ‘god’ but in reality it was freedom. opportunities.

esperanza caved into dancing because her uncle nacho kept insisting, he pulled her into the dance floor. after the dance she seems to have gained some confidence & she is flattered to be watched by a boy

In “Four Skinny Trees,” Esperanza personifies the trees in her front yard, saying she and they understand each other, even that they teach her things. She relates to the trees because they don't seem to belong in the neighborhood and because they persevere despite the concrete that tries to keep them in the ground. Neither she nor they belong here on Mango Street, but they are stuck here.

the only word esperanza’s father knew in english when he first started to learn the language. it was all he ate for 3/4 months, and after that he never ate ham & eggs ever again. in the book its emphasized that he spoke broken english, pronouncing it as hamandeggs . He doesnt eat hamandeggs anymore because he speaks english, which is a privilege that allows him to ask for other food

hes abusive, breaking things when he gets angry and gives half-assed apologies. leaves minevra and her kids only to return a while later. not present in his kids lives. also beats minevra

Esperanza's mother was very smart and talented, yet she never finished school, never got a job, and is stuck living on Mango Street.

in this quote esperanza wonders if sally wishes to live in a nice house and be free of all the things they have to deal with in their current house, such as nosy neighbors, cars ext. along with this she wonders if she wishes to have a chore-free life. “no sheets and towels and laundry.” these are things she wouldn’t have to deal with in her “nice house”
