Stock of knowledge, skills etc - makes asset to society.

Informal learning process in school. Side effect of education. Teaches N&Vs.

Means values and rules only applies to particular person in given situations.

Value and rules apply to all members equally.

Socialisation/Social Solidarity: Education systems meets functions of society by passing on N&Vs 🡪 through hidden curriculum and PSHE. Builds social solidarity.

Bridge: school gives link from family and wider society 🡪 helps them adjust to society.

Develop Human Capital: Education provided trained/qualified workers – makes best skilled workers.

Role Allocations: provides means to select people into hierarchy. In meritocratic society access linked to education.

Ignores aspects of education which are dysfunctional 🡪 negative conflict.

Myth of meritocracy – private education – those have advantages.

Hidden curriculum reinforces social inequality and maintains ruling class ideology.

Hidden curriculum maintains and reinforces patriarchy.

functionalists see children as passive puppets of socialisation when process is much more complex and involves teacher – pupils’ relationships.
